How Threat Level Functions As Bottleneck Prediction

Protected Flow Manufacturing (PFM)™ is not a scheduling tool. It is a dynamic, real-time prioritization system that continuously directs work based on Threat Level.

Threat Level is how much each job is at risk of being late. Due date and customer are important inputs to that calculation, but they are not the driver. Due date specifically is an important input, but it is not the driver. Threat Level is the default driver. Customer is a field that may override Threat Level if needed, so Threat Level is the default but can be overridden when your business rules require it.

Threat Levels are not manually assigned. They are calculated in real time for each operation at each resource area, using approved data from your ERP, machines, and other sources. When conditions change – a breakdown, a rush order, a late material delivery – Threat Levels are recalculated and the list at each work center reshuffles automatically.

When multiple high Threat Level jobs begin accumulating at the same work center, that concentration is visible before the jobs go late. Supervisors do not have to walk the floor to find the pressure point.

Think of it like GPS navigation. Traditional planning is like printing directions before you leave – accurate when created, useless when traffic changes. PFM watches actual conditions and continuously reroutes work toward on-time completion.

PFM works alongside ERP. It reads the data ERP already holds and uses it to generate real-time prioritization across the shop floor. Progress data can come from multiple sources – captured in PFM, fed via machine data collection tools, or sourced from the ERP itself. PFM only optionally sends information back to the ERP.
